Sears Helps Families Make 'The Big Switch' to Replace Five Million Old Appliances With ENERGY STAR庐 Qualified Models
Customers Encouraged to Take ENERGY STAR Pledge and Potentially Save More Than $2,500 on Utility Bills
Today, Sears, as the 2010 ENERGY STAR庐 Retail Partner of the Year, is launching a new initiative called The Big Switch, to help families make the switch to five million ENERGY STAR qualified appliances. The Big Switch is aimed at helping families remove and recycle millions of inefficient appliances from the energy grid for good, and saving families more than $2,500 on their utility bills(1). Sears is also launching a new website, searsbigswitch.com, where customers can take the Sears ENERGY STAR Pledge and learn more about how they can help reduce their energy and water consumption and reduce their impact on the environment.

"Sears is committed to offering the benefits of energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR to our customers and helping them save money," said Doug Moore, president of Home Appliances for Sears. "On the heels of the national 'Cash for Appliances' program, we hope to create a movement with The Big Switch that encourages even more customers to take the ENERGY STAR Pledge, consider ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and learn more about the small steps they can take to make a difference for our environment. We're asking customers to take the first small step today by going to SearsBigSwitch.com and taking the Sears ENERGY STAR Pledge."
Beyond the financial savings, The Big Switch will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the replacement and responsible disposal of old appliances. Sears does this through its recycling program. Sears was the first retail member of the EPA's Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) program.
"Sears continues to demonstrate innovative ways to educate consumers about energy-efficient products and ENERGY STAR," said Gina McCarthy, Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation at the Environmental Protection Agency. "Thanks to these efforts by Sears, and those of our other partners, we continue to see an increased demand for products that have earned the ENERGY STAR that help Americans save money on their utility bills and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions."
