"Tuesday's tragedy has affected all of us at Sears," said Gary Salvatore, Sears district general manager in New Jersey. "But out of our anger and our grief comes a strong resolve to help with any and all of the relief efforts going on in New York. We are working closely with the American Red Cross to donate money, merchandise and supplies to local agencies and municipal workers who are helping the victims and their families and friends."
In addition to giving a minimum of $1 million in immediate aid, Sears also is partnering with the American Red Cross to coordinate future blood drives at select stores, including New York and New Jersey, to sustain the agency's blood drive over a longer period of time. The company anticipates issuing local announcements regarding store locations in a few weeks.
"The outpouring of support and compassion that our associates and customers have shown has been overwhelming," said Sam Alexander, Sears district general manager in New York. "We have been working with the Mayor's office to identify what supplies are needed and already have donated flashlights, batteries, shoes and other items to the local police emergency team and the Bronx Fire Department. We are humbled by the courage and dedication of the emergency relief workers and will continue to look for additional ways to help them during this extremely difficult time in all of our lives."
